PC Andrew Harper’s widow Lissie Harper said she was “beyond appalled” that her husband’s killers will still be released. She said: “To release them early from their already pitiful sentences is an affront to justice. The Government and the justice system have not just let me down... they have added insult to injury. This is an utter betrayal – and it’s one I will not be able to forgive or forget.”
Criminals guilty of manslaughter will be eligible to be freed halfway through their sentences, despite Labour’s review of the scheme.
Rapists and serious child sexual offenders, including grooming-gang perpetrators, will no longer be released early following pressure from victims, MPs and front-line prison officers.
It is understood Mrs Harper was informed of the outcome of the review yesterday by Mr Norris after one of the offenders had already been told about their impending release.
She told The Telegraph: “It makes a mockery of the way Andrew died. I live with desperation every day. But I won’t take it lying down. It’s gutting for us. It feels like justice has been taken away from us again. They worried about backlash from prisoners, but the public will have a backlash too.”
Writing in The Telegraph, Mr Burnham said he had “pushed to the very limits of what is possible” but could not exempt more criminals without the jail system “collapsing within months”.
In an attempt to prevent future jail overcrowding, Mr Burnham also revealed he had asked Alex Norris, the Justice Secretary, to consider the early release of more female prisoners, “given the lower risk they generally pose”.
Under the “earned progression” scheme, serious offenders, including killers and rapists, would have been eligible to be freed halfway rather than two-thirds of the way through their sentences unless they had behaved badly in jail. Lower-level criminals were set to be freed as little as a third, rather than 40 per cent, of the way through.
Mr Burnham said that after listening to victims’ concerns, rapists and child sexual offenders would not be eligible for the sentencing changes.
The Telegraph revealed last month that Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole, who were jailed for 13 years in 2020 for the manslaughter of Pc Harper, 28, were eligible to be released after serving six and a half years in prison. Despite the story prompting Mr Burnham to pause the release of 6,000 offenders, the outcome of the Prime Minister’s review means Bowers and Cole could now walk free by the end of the year.
Writing in The Telegraph, Mr Burnham said: “I know there will be concerns about who will still be released early for other offences. I have pushed to the very limits of what is possible. I know I can look people in the eye and say to them there is nothing more I could have asked for without risking the system collapsing within months.”
Pc Harper had gone to investigate the theft of a quad bike near Sulhamstead, Berks, in August 2019 when Bowers and Cole tried to escape in the car driven by the third killer, Henry Long, who is not eligible for early release. Pc Harper died after his ankles got caught in a towrope loop and he was dragged for more than a mile along country roads.
Nick Timothy, the shadow justice secretary, said: “One of Andy Burnham’s first acts as Prime Minister will be to let thousands of criminals – including killers and paedophiles – out early.”
Mrs Harper has described the potential early release of the killers as “deplorable”, while Pc Harper’s mother, Debbie Adlam, said it would be a “slap in the face”.

BRITAIN’S potato crop is under threat from heatwaves, farmers have warned. Chips may soon be shorter and baked potatoes could be hard to come by as high temperatures stunt spuds’ growth.
Jim Wayman of 3Ms, an East Anglian potato-growing conglomerate, which supplies supermarkets including Marks & Spencer and Aldi, told The Telegraph: “We’ve been chucking water on them, but in this heat they’re not growing. It’s like watering a corpse.”
Mr Wayman said: “We’re being accused of scaremongering, and the big retailers are saying their customers expect a certain standard of size, but we’re saying we can’t do it.”
Cedric Porter, a potato market analyst, said August was a key month for potatoes putting on weight, but most had stopped growing. He urged the public to “eat your spuds while you can”.
Potatoes stop growing if temperatures rise above 30C, and average levels surpassed that on 16 days in the year up to the end of last month. England and Wales have had their driest July in records dating back to 1836, provisional statistics from the Met Office show, while temperatures climbed above 30C again yesterday.
Adding to the problem is the fact that heatwaves have also hit much of Europe, meaning Britain will struggle to import large potatoes.
Last year there was an oversupply of large potatoes, in part because slimming “fat jabs” led to people eating less carbohydrate and more protein. Much of the oversupply was fed to cattle.
Nigel Farage is in talks to strike an electoral pact with Restore Britain. The Reform UK leader said that he was “open-minded” about discussing working with his former colleague Rupert Lowe, who was ejected from the party last year. Mr Lowe, who now leads the Restore party, said on Sunday that the pair needed to work together to bring about a “patriotic government” at the next election. A Restore source ruled out a merger but said Mr Lowe wanted a “co-operation” pact.

A QUARTER of hospital beds will be occupied by dementia patients within 15 years if Andy Burnham fails in his planned overhaul of social care, a review has warned.
Mr Burnham, whose father has dementia, has pledged to spend his “political capital” creating a fully funded national care service. But the Prime Minister has yet to explain how it would be paid for, while ruling out rises in income tax, National Insurance and VAT, despite previously proposing a 10 per cent levy on estates.
The review suggests that the scale of the crisis facing the NHS is greater than ministers have acknowledged. Dementia care costs are expected to more than double by 2040, from £42.5bn to £90bn, with unnecessary hospital stays driving much of the increase.
Almost one in six NHS beds is already occupied by someone with dementia, at a cost of about £12m a day. Experts have warned that this is set to reach one in four by 2040 – “crowding out care for everyone” – without radical change.
Britain’s hospitals are acting increasingly as substitutes for a failing care system, leaving thousands of people with dementia enduring long stays. It found that people with dementia were 42 per cent more likely to be admitted to hospital than those without the condition and, once admitted, remained in hospital seven times longer than their peers.
Philanthropist Laurence Geller, chairman of the commission, said: “Our hospitals are already stretched to breaking point. It is not sustainable to allocate one in six hospital beds to people with dementia when neither they nor their families want them to be there, at a cost more than £12m a day.
The review, by researchers at University College London (UCL), backed by the Geller Commission, Dementia UK and the Alzheimer’s Society, is the most comprehensive analysis yet of dementia hospitalisations, examining evidence from 77 studies involving almost 1.5 million participants.
“Without urgent action, almost one in four hospital beds could be occupied by people with dementia within 15 years, which would overwhelm hospitals and crowd out care for everyone.”
A British woman has had pioneering womb surgery to treat her unborn baby, whose intestines were growing outside his body. Maisie Savage was operated on by a team of surgeons in Texas when she was 26 weeks pregnant. Her unborn son Theo had been diagnosed with complex gastroschisis, a condition in which the belly button does not develop properly and the intestines develop externally. “He’s a little miracle,” said Ms Savage, 29, from London.

ANDY BURNHAM is taking a holiday two weeks after becoming Prime Minister.
No 10 said he would be taking a break from his day-to-day duties to spend time with his family, but insisted he would remain in contact with officials and was still in charge.
Mr Burnham became Prime Minister on July 20, making him the sixth in a decade. He promised his premiership would be a “circuit breaker for Britain” which would bring in the “biggest changes in the last 40 years”. Speaking on the steps of No 10 Downing Street, he said the challenge was to “make politics work, to make it work better”.
In his first two weeks he made a string of policy announcements on cutting the cost of living and a speech on the need for social care reform as well as outlining his vision to tackle youth unemployment, devolve more power to mayors and use defence spending as a driver for regional growth.
Mr Burnham’s early break was criticised by Reform. Lee Anderson, the party’s chairman, said: “Two weeks into the job and Andy Burnham has already had enough. After dropping a number of unfunded commitments and overseeing over 2,000 illegal migrants breaking into our country he’s bunked off for a jolly abroad. This isn’t a Prime Minister that’s serious about leading.”
No 10 would not say how long Mr Burnham and his family would be away or where they would be going on his holiday. However, a spokesman said: “The Government continues to operate as normal, with the Prime Minister remaining in contact with officials, holding meetings and receiving regular updates on government business.”
It is usual for prime ministers to take a break in August because Parliament is not sitting. It returns in September for a couple of weeks before a second recess.

BENEFIT claimants are being offered discounts on holidays and sex toys under deals involving some of Britain’s biggest brands.
Users who subscribe to the scheme for a small monthly fee have previously been offered exclusive deals including up to 70 per cent off items sold by Lovehoney – a sex shop – as well as 10 per cent off Calvin Klein underwear.
Other promotions have included up to £500 off TUI holidays, as well as money off other trips with Jet2holidays and to Alton Towers.
It also provides discounts on luxury items, including an exclusive 25 per cent off deal with watchmaker Rotary, as well as jewellery.
Anxious and neurodiverse claimants can also benefit from reduced prices on luxury watches, jewellery and designer clothes through private sector schemes designed for disabled people.
Today, more than four million people claim disability benefits, with more than a third claiming mental health as their “main disabling condition”.
But a number of concessions also extend to individuals with “hidden disabilities”, such as ADHD, who are in receipt of personal independence payments (Pip) – despite fears some individuals are abusing the system.
The National Disability Card is another scheme which offers discounts for online shopping and days out. It costs £20 for two years for those who are eligible. Another, the Access Card, is designed to display disabilities to staff at attractions and events, including social anxiety in crowds and queues.
One website teaches users how to cash in on “Pip Freebies”, while backers of the schemes promote the perks on social media, describing them as the “best-kept secret” in accessibility.

Opponents claim these schemes threaten to disturb the delicate balance between a welfare system that protects the truly needy and a culture that risks incentivising worklessness.
Such discounts have also raised concerns about how much more other consumers are paying to subsidise lower costs for different groups.
Georgina Colman, the founder of Purpl, said “Purpl is not a welfare scheme. Privately funded retail discounts should not be conflated with debates about how Pip is assessed. Our focus is helping disabled people reduce the extra cost of disability.”
Lee Anderson, the chairman of Reform UK, said Pip should be reserved for those who “genuinely need help”, not “to get discounted sex toys and luxury holidays”.
He added: “Living on benefits is becoming more attractive than working, so much so that people are actively coaching others on how to exploit these schemes on social media.”
Dianne Taylor, of the National Disability Card scheme said the discounts were “funded by retailers at no cost to the taxpayer”.

BRITAIN’S prisons crisis has its roots in a failure to add sufficient new places between 2010 and 2024. Just 500 places were added and 23 prisons were closed. As a result, the system is now dangerously close to capacity and we run the risk of new offenders not being incarcerated in a timely manner.
I understand their anger and anxiety. More than that, I share it. Because of that, one of my first decisions as Prime Minister was to pause the plan for early release in September and order an urgent review of the scheme.
That has now concluded and, as a result, I have decided to make some significant changes. Sentences for rape, serious child sex offences and other grooming offences will now be excluded. This will be on top of the offenders who are already blocked because they have been deemed by the courts as the most dangerous prisoners.
The situation must be gripped and that is what I have done in my first days as Prime Minister. But I have done so by trying to put myself in the shoes of victims of crime and seeing things through their eyes. My approach has been to maximise support for them and minimise the risks to public safety.
I know there will be concerns about who will still be released early. But I know I can look people in the eye and say to them there is nothing more I could have asked for without risking the prison system collapsing within months. Such an outcome would expose the public to enormous risk: police would be unable to make arrests; courts would be unable to send new offenders to prison; and our justice system would grind to a halt.
To avoid a repeat of this situation, I have also asked the Justice Secretary to identify other ways to free up prison capacity that will be more palatable to the public.
First, I have asked him to review the indefinite sentences handed out between 2005 and 2012, called Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP). This has left many hundreds of people in prison since they were young but without any prospect of release despite having already served very long sentences.
Second, I have asked for the early release of more women prisoners to be considered, and to look at converting more of the women’s prison estate to hold male prisoners, given the lower risk they generally pose.
Third, I have asked officials to consider faster returns of foreign national offenders to their country of origin.
The changes we are announcing today will make a difference, but I do not pretend it is a perfect solution or that it goes as far as I would like. My commitment over the months and years ahead is to rebuild our justice system so that it commands the confidence of the public. This will not happen overnight or without difficulty. But we will deliver a justice system that the British people expect and deserve.
For someone trying to rebuild their life after a traumatic experience, few things could feel more unjust than learning the person responsible for their suffering would be released earlier than thought. Yet that has been the painful experience of many victims.

Police inspector ‘groped way around dancefloor’ A police inspector sexually assaulted three female colleagues during one night out in a Soho bar, his trial has heard.
Dave Newman, 39, from Luton, is alleged to have “grabbed, groped, stroked and pinched his way around the dancefloor” at the central London venue, Southwark Crown Court was told.
One woman said she froze when the defendant – then a police officer – placed his hand on her vagina area, above her clothes, for around two seconds.
He has denied three counts of sexual assault against three different women, who cannot be identified.
The trial continues.
Body found in search for missing kayaker A body has been found in the search for a 19-year-old kayaker whose boat capsized off the Northumbrian coast last month.
The body of Michael Henry, from the Rothbury area, was located near Blyth on July 26. Northumbria Police had been conducting extensive searches for Mr Henry’s body since July 7 when a kayak containing two men capsized near Boulmer. The other man was saved by the coastguard.
Formal identification has taken place and a report has been prepared for the coroner.
Henry’s family said: “Michael was a much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, team-mate and friend.”
Violin teacher cleared of sex assault on student A former Royal College of Music violin teacher has been found not guilty of sexually assaulting a prospective student.
Jan Repko, 68, met the complainant in an effective “taster session” for her to play a few violin pieces for him, Southwark Crown Court had heard. The musician was accused of sexually assaulting her during the session in 2022.
Mr Repko, from Walworth, in south-east London – who also taught at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester – was acquitted of sexual assault by touching and assault by penetration.

A BRITISH woman has had pioneering womb surgery to treat her unborn baby, whose intestines were growing outside his body. Maisie Savage was operated on by a team of surgeons in Texas when she was 26 weeks pregnant. Her unborn son Theo had been diagnosed with complex gastroschisis, a condition in which the belly button does not develop properly and the intestines develop externally. Surgeons used keyhole surgery techniques to reach the baby in Ms Savage’s womb and push his organs back inside his abdomen.

Theo, who is now five months old and doing well, was the third baby in the world to benefit from a clinical trial of the procedure. Currently, one in 10 babies with gastroschisis does not survive. Ms Savage, 29, from London, and the baby’s 36-year-old father Josh French said they were relieved by the surgery’s success. She told the BBC: “He’s a little miracle.” Gastroschisis is a serious birth defect affecting 3,000 babies in the UK each year. In less severe cases, babies require weeks in intensive care, corrective surgery and feeding through a tube.
‘Everything they did just completely reversed what could have been a really horrible start to life’
In the most complex cases, they need an intestinal transplant, up to six months in intensive care, several operations and intravenous feeding for up to two years. Mr French said the diagnosis, which was made after Ms Savage’s 20-week scan, had been a shock and “incredibly scary”. The couple, both teachers, were referred by medics at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, where a team of paediatric surgeons led by Dr Michael Belfort have been running a clinical trial to operate on unborn babies. The couple were told to travel to Texas immediately and remain there for the rest of the pregnancy. Ms Savage said: “It was a huge decision.” Before heading to the States, the couple had to travel to Leuven Hospital, in Belgium, where specialists needed to give Ms Savage a Botox injection through her womb into Theo’s abdominal wall, to relax the muscles to make the repair easier. During the operation in Texas, the amniotic fluid in Ms Savage’s womb was drained and replaced with carbon dioxide to give surgeons space to operate. Mr French told the BBC: “The length of that day, it felt like a week. The waiting and just not knowing exactly what was going on at each and every stage.” Ms Savage was left with a scar twice the size of a C-section incision but still had a baby growing inside her womb for another 14 weeks. Theo would often kick her scar causing her pain. “It was a hard recovery,” Ms Savage said. “But it was worth it.” Theo was born naturally in Texas in February. Ms Savage, who has now returned home to London, said: “Everything they did just completely reversed what could have been a really horrible start to his life, and he’s just the best. He’s a completely normal baby, essentially.” Mr French added: “We both feel incredibly fortunate. The impact they’ve had on us as a family is incredible. They made us feel so welcome, from the team at Great Ormond Street to Dr Belfort and the team. TEXAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL “Whilst we were over there, the level of care was amazing, and they made a very traumatic time of our lives so much easier, and we’ve got this little man – we couldn’t be happier.” Dr Belfort, who is obstetrician and gynaecologist-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital, said he was delighted with how the operation and recovery had gone so far. FARMERS are spraying apples with clay “sun cream” as they try to protect them from soaring temperatures. The fruit are being sprayed with a clay substance that acts like a sun cream as parts of the country experience their fourth heatwave of the year. Drought conditions were declared across half of England on Wednesday. Clive Baxter, a farmer in Kent, said the sunscreen stopped the apples from cooking themselves. Mr Baxter told The Telegraph: “We spray the trees with kaolin, or China clay. It is an organic product and acts like whitewash to block out the sun. I’m aware of other growers in Kent who have been doing this technique for the last few years.” Bramley apples are “very susceptible” to sunburn, he told the BBC. The sunscreen is made by mixing horticultural kaolin clay – a non-toxic mineral powder – with water, which farmers then use to coat the apples, creating a white film that reflects UV radiation and reduces fruit surface temperatures. Mr Baxter added that apple trees were so “stressed” by the rising temperatures that farmers were having to thin them, leading to lower yields. Farmers said they were also feeding cows hay – their winter food supply – because grass had not grown in the heat. The mixture, which can also protect the trees from insects such as apple maggots and some moths, is then washed off the produce before it reaches consumers.

CLOSING the Jodrell Bank Observatory would be a “short-sighted” move, Andy Burnham has been warned. More than 200 leading scientists and cultural figures, including Prof Brian Cox and Sir Brian May, the Queen guitarist, have issued the warning in an open letter following the “catastrophic” decision to cut public funding for the Cheshire-based site. The complex, which includes radio telescopes that helped track the first Moon landing, is facing closure under Labour because of the cuts, which have been labelled “scientific vandalism” by researchers. Jodrell Bank was founded in 1945 by Bernard Lovell, a leading physicist. In addition to playing a crucial role in monitoring human space exploration, it also served as an early-warning radar for missile attacks during the Cold War. The open letter said the decision was “profoundly depressing” and would poke out some of the world’s clearest eyes on the sky. Prof Cox, one of the UK’s foremost television scientists, used to be a keyboard player for the band D:Ream, which filmed the music video for their 1995 hit Party Up The World at Jodrell Bank. But public funding for the site, which includes the Lovell Telescope, the largest steerable radio telescope in the world at the time of its completion in 1957, is to end in March 2028. The letter called on the Government to “immediately” find the £2.8m a year needed to fund the observatory, arguing that it could “play an essential role” in UK defence by “tracking space debris, destructive solar flares, satellites and asteroids”. Joining them are members of the Prime Minister’s favourite Manchester bands, including Johnny Marr, the co-founder of The Smiths, and Elbow, whose track One Day Like This featured on his Makerfield by-election campaign launch video.

LYNDA LA PLANTE, the best-selling crime writer, tearfully told a court a driving ban would end her career after she was caught breaking a 20mph speed limit five times. But the 83 year-old, who is best known for creating the character of Prime Suspect’s DCI Jane Tennison, a no-nonsense detective, failed in her own real-life battle with the law to avoid being banned from the road. The writer tried to swerve a ban by claiming she needed her car to meet criminals to research her books. She said criminals could be “very choosy” about where they meet her, and claimed she could not employ a driver because they would distract her with questions as she tried to recount information she has been told. She also failed to avoid a driving ban despite employing Nick Freeman, a lawyer known as Mr Loophole for his prowess in getting celebrity clients out of driving bans. Yesterday, La Plante pleaded guilty at Lavender Hill magistrates’ court, in south-west London, to breaking the 20mph speed limit near her home in Kingston-upon-Thames five times between November 2025 and April this year. The court heard she already has nine points on her licence, from three speeding offences in June 2023, and June and July 2025. She admitted driving at 24mph twice, 25mph, 26mph, and 27mph in the latest offences, which all happened as she took her 18-month-old dog for his daily walk. Mr Freeman urged magistrates to spare her a ban, saying driving is a “vital part of who she is”. La Plante told the court she would wind up her writing company if banned, putting four staff members out of work. Giving evidence, La Plante said she got Theo after suffering the devastation of the untimely death of another dog, Hugo, who was “in the prime of his life”. FIVE of Mohamed Fayed’s victims were human trafficked, the Home Office has confirmed. Their cases dated back to the 1990s, while the most recent took place after the 2010 sale of Harrods. All five survivors have received conclusive grounds decisions from the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) that they are victims of modern slavery, after being referred by the charity Unseen UK. The NRM is the UK’s official framework for identifying victims of modern slavery, which allows victims to receive appropriate support and provides the Government with data about modern slavery in the UK.
One survivor has told how they were recruited into a false role at Harrods, while two were hired for a legitimate role and then selected for abuse off the shop floor. Another survivor was employed as a domestic worker for a member of the Fayed family after being recruited via a letting agency called Hyde Park Residence.

Statutory first responders, including the police, Border Force, the National Crime Agency and local authorities, must offer an NRM referral to any adult they have reasonable grounds to believe may be a victim of modern slavery. On April 29, it was reported by the BBC that Rachel Louw had received a positive conclusive grounds decision, after reporting abuse suffered at the hands of Fayed and his brother Salah.
Since then, all four members of an advocacy group for Fayed survivors called No One Above have also received conclusive grounds decisions: Justine, Elizabeth, Margo and Isabella, all pseudonyms. It is understood that there are more survivors who have also received positive decisions. Four people have been questioned to date, 19 months after the investigation opened. More than 400 allegations of sexual misconduct have been made against Fayed, dating from 1977 to 2014, including sexual assault, rape, sexual exploitation and human trafficking. The Met Police is investigating at least 156 victims who contacted them directly, including 21 who came forward before Fayed’s death in 2023 at the age of 94. The Home Office has been approached for comment.
AN AFGHAN national arrested on suspicion of murdering a British woman in Athens and disposing of her remains in a suitcase is a champion boxer who co-ran a refugee charity, according to reports. Sharif Ahmadzai, 26, has been detained by Greek police for allegedly killing Elisabeth-Jane Ross, a 38-year-old charity volunteer, and using her bank card to withdraw thousands of euros. Initial medical reports suggest she died from asphyxiation, according to a case file. Mr Ahmadzai is said to have admitted to dumping Ms Ross’s body inside an abandoned building and sending text messages from her phone to convince relatives she was alive.

Greek authorities disclosed that a homeless man had discovered Ms Ross’s remains on July 18 after he noticed a “bad smell” emanating from an empty building in the Kypseli district. Mr Ahmadzai, a father of one, became the key suspect after his American wife, Alaina Hall, raised concerns to the police about his behaviour in the days following Ms Ross’s death, The Times and the Daily Mail reported. The couple reportedly knew Ms Ross, a Christian volunteer from Edinburgh, through their non-governmental organisation named Love Every Nation Athens. The pair moved to Athens in 2019 and married on April 29 2023.
Mr Ahmadzai fled Afghanistan aged 15 and arrived in Lesbos on a small boat in 2016 as a refugee after his family was killed by the Taliban, according to a self-penned blog post. In the post, Mr Ahmadzai describes how his father, a military commander, survived six assassination attempts by the Taliban before insurgents killed him in an ambush. In the post, Mr Ahmadzai wrote: “I lost everything I had. I deserved a better life than this. So many of my dreams were killed. Life truly isn’t fair, but I never gave up, and I will never give up. God is on my side. He is not finished with me. And now, my biggest dream is to serve others with everything I have.”

While at the island’s Moria Camp, the second-largest refugee camp in Europe, he met Ms Hall, who was a volunteer. Mr Ahmadzai converted to Christianity the next year. Mr Ahmadzai fought twice as a professional boxer in Athens, competing in the Super Light division. He lost his debut in June 2025 and won his second in March 2026, taking the vacant national title.
Detectives are said to have opened an investigation into Mr Ahmadzai after his wife found him missing from their home on July 15 and checked his shared location, which placed him at Ms Ross’s apartment. Mr Ahmadzai allegedly attempted to give his wife €2,550 (£2,200) in cash along with a new Apple iPhone 17 Pro, which she handed over to police believing they had been bought with Ms Ross’s money. When police raided his home on Aug 1, they found a black metal replica pistol and a black military-style knife, according to sources quoted by the Daily Mail. When questioned by police, Mr Ahmadzai reportedly told detectives that he found Ms Ross already dead in her bathroom but later admitted to dumping her body. Mr Ahmadzai is expected to appear before Athens magistrates’ court tomorrow.
Ms Ross, a committed Christian who was known as Lisa, often travelled to Greece to volunteer and help people through non-governmental organisations, and was regarded as a “good Samaritan”. She had travelled the world participating in charitable work inspired by her faith, including spending time in Kurdistan helping Syrian refugees. In Athens, she would often be seen talking to homeless people in the poorer parts of the city, including near an abandoned car park where they drank, took drugs and slept.
ONE in eight pregnant women are being diagnosed with diabetes as mothers get older and heavier, research shows. The study by the University of Edinburgh suggests the number of women diagnosed with gestational diabetes has risen by 60 per cent in just five years. Experts said rising maternal age, increasing rates of obesity and improvements in data collection are likely to be behind the trend. Although it usually resolves after birth, women diagnosed with gestational diabetes are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease later in life.

Researchers analysed NHS maternity records covering more than 2.3 million women who gave birth to 2.8 million babies at 184 hospitals in England between 2018 and 2022. Obesity has become increasingly common among women entering pregnancy. NHS maternity data show almost one in four women are obese at their first antenatal appointment, compared with around one in five in the late 2010s. The study found diagnoses rose from around 8 per cent of pregnancies in England in 2018 to more than 12 per cent in 2022. The average age of mothers in England and Wales has increased steadily over recent decades, reaching 30.9 years in 2023, compared with 29.3 years in 2003.
Rebecca Reynolds, professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Edinburgh, said: “The rising number of women being diagnosed is concerning and impacts on maternity services delivery which are already challenged. Importantly, gestational diabetes also increases risk of future type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” she said, calling for better preventative measures to help support women after giving birth.
The study found the rise in gestational diabetes was greatest among Asian women, where almost one in four pregnancies were affected by 2022, and among women living in the most deprived areas, where rates reached around one in seven. In 2022, around two in every 21 white mothers were diagnosed with gestational diabetes, compared with two in 13 black mothers and two in nine Asian mothers. Women from these groups were also more likely to experience pregnancy complications. Black mothers had 36 per cent higher odds of an emergency caesarean section, while women living in deprived areas were 29 per cent more likely to give birth prematurely. Asian women were more than twice as likely to have babies who were small for their gestational age.
WHITE-TAILED eagles have been released in Exmoor National Park for the first time in 200 years. Six of the large raptors were released as part of a project by Forestry England and the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation to return the species to England’s skies, after it was persecuted so intensely in the 18th century that it was wiped out in the region. The project has led to the release of 45 white-tailed eagles from the Isle of Wight since 2019. Since then, some of the birds have started breeding, and in 2023, this resulted in the birth of the first chick to be born in the wild in southern England since 1780.

Twenty of the raptors – Britain’s largest birds of prey – will be released over three years at the national park, officials said. Conservationists say they introduced the birds to Exmoor National Park – which sits across the border between Somerset and Devon – to boost the population and expand their breeding range into south-west England. Exmoor was chosen as an additional location for their release after satellite tracking showed that some of the Isle of Wight birds had frequently visited the area, where historically they would have bred. It provides ideal foraging and plenty of fish, and breeding habitat along the coastline.
The six birds were taken under licence from the wild in Scotland – where white-tailed eagles were successfully reintroduced some years ago – and brought south to Exmoor, where they have been cared for by experts. It is expected that they will travel widely following their release, before returning to the area to breed when they are four or five years old. Zoe Smith, from the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation, said: “After so many years absent from this landscape, it is a special moment to be returning them on Exmoor.” Ali Hawkins, senior ecologist with the Exmoor National Park Authority, said: “This is such an exciting moment for Exmoor.”

Nathan Owen, 33, drove at speeds of up to 86mph in Merseyside for about 35 minutes during the incident on March 6 2024. Liverpool Crown Court heard he had run into “fi nancial diffi culties” and was in arrears with CA Auto Finance with about £5,000 left to pay. On the day of the incident, he called loan company Plata to ask if he would be able to borrow more on top of the £3,000 he had already loaned from them, but was told he could not. Five minutes later, shortly after 2pm, he called 999 claiming his car would not brake and he had no control over the vehicle, which he said was accelerating. Eric Lamb, prosecuting, said: “In fact, his car was stationary at the time of that call.” Police attended and the car, which was then travelling at speeds of up to 86mph, had to be boxed off by emergency service vehicles to keep other road users safe before it came to a stop on the M62 near Warrington, Cheshire. He collided with a police car 31 times as offi cers tried to stop him and investigations found there was no fault with ‘He had fabricated the events in order to enable him to get rid of the vehicle’ the car, the court heard. Mr Lamb said: “He had fabricated the events in order to enable him to get rid of the vehicle. racism from patients, experts have said.

ROD LIDDLE, the journalist and former editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, has died at the age of 66. Rod Liddle pictured in 2014. His children said that their father ‘will always be our guide on how to live an extraordinary life’
Liddle, a columnist for The Sunday Times and The Sun, and a presenter on Times Radio, died on Sunday evening at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough after a short illness. He was one of the highest-profile editors of the Today programme, which he ran from 1998 until 2002.
His children, Wilder, Tyler and Emmy, said in a statement: “We’re all very saddened and shocked at the sudden passing of our wonderful father. He raised us much as you might imagine, to be inquisitive, brave and always humorous. Even in hospital in the last few weeks, he consistently held the room and never let the awful situation show.
“He has left a legacy that we are all incredibly proud of. He will always be our guide on how to live an extraordinary life.”
After leaving the BBC, he became a columnist for The Spectator, where he delighted in airing controversial opinions on race, immigration and feminism. He regularly accused his former employer of Left-wing bias, although he categorised himself in a Guardian interview as being Blue Labour.
Liddle was the author of several books, including Selfish Whining Monkeys: How We Ended Up Greedy, Narcissistic and Unhappy (2014) and an analysis of Brexit entitled The Great Betrayal (2019).
Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News UK, publisher of The Sun and Sunday Times, said Liddle “challenged conventional thinking and left an indelible mark on British journalism”.
Ben Taylor, editor of The Sunday Times, said: “Rod Liddle had a wonderful way with words and used his unique talent to speak for the readers, highlighting the cant and absurdity that bedevils modern life.” Victoria Newton, the editor-in-chief of The Sun, called him: “A terrific observer of the frailties of our political class.”
John Humphrys, a Today presenter during Liddle’s editorship, told The i Paper that they “argued like hell” but “for a presenter there was just something quite magical about him”.
Liddle resigned from Today after the BBC told him he would have to leave the programme if he did not stop writing his column for The Guardian.
Born in Sidcup, south-east London, Liddle was a member of the Socialist Workers’ Party and supported the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in his youth. He started his career at the South Wales Echo and later worked for the Labour Party before joining the BBC.

TONY LIVESEY has left the BBC fewer than two months after being named in a Panorama investigation into David Sullivan.
Livesey, who was editor-in-chief of the Daily Sport and Sunday Sport and subsequently had a 16-year career at Radio 5 Live, temporarily stepped down in June.
The BBC had been “considering” serious allegations made by Panorama against Sullivan, who co-owns West Ham United.
The 62-year-old did so after Panorama said he had set up a meeting between a glamour model and Sullivan, who was accused by the programme of historic predatory and exploitative behaviour in the 1990s.
A spokesman said at the time: “The Panorama investigation included allegations about Tony Livesey which we take seriously. We also note Tony has firmly denied the allegations.
“He has asked to step back from presenting his radio show for a short period and we will be considering the matters raised by the programme. We will not be commenting further at this stage.”
Livesey said he had “no recollection” of introducing the young woman to Sullivan, who also denied any wrongdoing.

The programme additionally claimed Livesey came up with the idea of “Countdown to 16”, a Sport feature chronicling how long before a teenage model turned 16, the age at which they could legally be pictured topless for the first time.

In an email sent to 5 Live staff yesterday morning, Heidi Dawson, the station’s controller, said Livesey had decided to leave. She added: “Tony has asked me to pass on his heartfelt thanks to the brilliant colleagues at 5 Live who he has had the pleasure of working with over the years. “I know many of you have also really enjoyed working with Tony, and we wish him well for all his future endeavours.”
A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl has died after being found seriously injured on an industrial estate in Scotland.
Workers on the industrial estate were being asked to sign in and out to get through the police cordon, a nearby resident said.
Police Scotland said the girl had been found at the Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath at about 12.02am yesterday. Companies, including the building retailer Travis Perkins, and the engineering service provider Halliburton have units there.
She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she died.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with her death. Police say the man, who is white and British, was known to her and officers are not looking for anyone else.
Det Insp Mike Ness of the major investigation team said: “Members of the public will see an increased police presence and activity in the area as inquiries continue.
The force said other members of the family, who are from West Yorkshire, had been camping in the area. Det Supt Nicky McGovern said the girl’s family was being supported by specialist officers as their inquiries continued.
