A TWICE yearly jab may help millions of people control their high blood pressure better, experts hope.
The treatment could even let some patients ditch daily pills entirely.
One in three adults suffer high blood pressure, which is known as a “silent killer” as typically there are no symptoms.
Dr Manish Saxena, a hypertension specialist at Barts Health NHS Trust in London, said the jab “can be a real game-changer”.
He added: “The novelty of this treatment is its long duration; giving just one injection every six months could help millions of patients to better manage their condition.”

people to test the jab. High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart attacks and strokes, and many patients struggle to bring their readings down into the healthy range. Some end up taking multiple daily pills which can cause side effects including dizziness, headache, fatigue and swollen ankles. Dr Pauline Swift, who chairs the charity Blood Pressure UK, said: “The development of zilebesiran is an exciting step forward in the treatment of high blood pressure. A six-monthly injection could offer real hope to patients who struggle with daily medication. “However, as with any new treatment, we still need long-term data to fully understand its safety and effectiveness across diverse patient groups. “It’s a promising innovation, but more research essential before it becomes part of routine care.”
Zilebesiran is a new type of drug known as small interfering RNA. Dr Saxena – also clinical co-director of the William Harvey Clinical Research Centre at Queen Mary University of London – said: “Classically, we have used pharmacological drugs in treating high blood pressure, but now we are using RNA interference drugs. “This is a long-acting therapy – with one injection under the skin every six months you see a sustained blood pressure reduction, rather than taking a pill every day. “In treating hypertension, one of the big problems is adherence to medication.”
The phase three Zenith trial will involve more than 11,000 people, including hundreds at more than 50 sites across the UK. The first European patient was enrolled at Barts Health earlier this year. Participants will be offered either 300mg of zilebesiran or a placebo dose every six months. This will be in addition to their standard medications. The study, which will run for up to five years, will investigate whether the injection reduces patients’ risk of suffering heart attacks or strokes, of having to make urgent hospital visits – or even of dying from cardiovascular events. If successful, the trial could provide the evidence which is needed for the drug manufacturers Roche and Alnylam to seek regulatory approval.

Dr Saxena continued: “From the results that we have seen so far from previous studies, and the mechanism of action, how it works, the safety profile...we are quite confident that it should do well. “But we need to wait for the results to come out.” A previous international trial involving 663 people suffering with high blood pressure – and whose condition was not being managed well using standard treatment – found that adding the injection helped to significantly reduce readings. Dr Saxena stressed that he did not want to “rubbish existing treatments”, and that for many patients zilebesiran could become an extra tool alongside their current medication prescriptions. He added: “That needs to be seen in longer-term data but it’s quite possible that in some patients who have mild to moderate hypertension that might be well controlled with the injection alone. “Some patients might need more add-on therapies as well. That needs to be seen with more data coming out.” The study is recruiting adults with established cardiovascular disease, or who are aged 55 and over with a high risk of developing it. Participants must be taking at least two antihypertensive medications including a diuretic (water tablet). Dr Saxena added: “The trial is enrolling now, so if anybody is interested they can go

HOW DOES THE DRUG WORK? ZILEBESIRAN is a new type of medicine called a small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapy. It works by blocking the liver from making angiotensinogen, a protein used to produce the hormone angiotensin. Angiotensin causes blood vessels to narrow, raising blood pressure. By reducing the amount of angiotensin produced, zilebesiran helps blood vessels stay more relaxed – lowering blood pressure. One injection every six months is better than remembering my pills GUY Liebenberg took part in an earlier study of zilebesiran after struggling for years to control high blood pressure. He had been prescribed three daily pills before joining the trial but said: “I felt ill, I didn’t feel good.” Guy, 72, applied to take part in the research after reading about it in a newspaper. He stopped taking the other medications and received his first injection, alongside just one basic diuretic drug. Guy said: “My response was very favourable. My blood pressure dropped really, really well, considerably fast.” The former veterinary surgeon saw his readings fall from around 160/100mmHg to around 120/90mmHg. He remembers that the jab was uncomfortable, but worth it compared with taking more daily pills. Guy explained: “I lay on a table and they injected it into my abdomen. There was a burning feeling. The needle going in wasn’t that painful, but it’s when they inject the stuff, you can feel a slight burning under your skin. A tablet you might take every 12 to 24 hours and your blood pressure goes up and down. A six-monthly injection is bringing your blood pressure into a more medically acceptable range all the time. That to me was more favourable.”
Guy, of Brighton, waited for six hours before returning home after each injection, then took regular blood pressure readings. He received three more doses — one of which was a placebo — before the trial ended. Guy later took part in further blood pressure drug trials and his readings have stabilised since he retired. He added that the injection was “a great thing because you haven’t got the daily worry of taking medication all the time”. “If you’re going on holiday or travelling you have to remember to take your medication, sometimes before or after you’ve eaten. NIGEL Farage’s plan to order the Royal Navy to return asylum seekers to French beaches would violate France’s sovereignty and international law, the Paris government is claiming. The Reform UK leader unveiled his idea yesterday, arguing it was a humanitarian mission to save lives at sea while saving French locals from a migrant crimewave. The party claimed France would have no choice but to accept the small boat people back on its shores. But its Interior Ministry said: “This would constitute a violation of French sovereignty, as well as a violation of the law of the sea and international law.” Mr Farage replied: “I will always stand up for the British people and their interests. Humanitarian missions do not violate maritime or international law.“ He and home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf unveiled their scheme at a London press conference yesterday. If Reform won power, it would order 10 Navy patrol vessels into the Channel from which military-crewed inflatables could pull alongside boats carrying asylum seekers. Migrant arrests will fall to police and Border Force officers before the small boat occupants are given refreshments and medical checks, then returned to France or Belgium by the Navy or Royal Marines. Reform said it would set up a joint military command with units from the Navy, Marines, RAF and Army as well as surveillance operatives. It insists the plan is legal and complies with the European Convention of Human Rights.

REFORM UK’s Richard Tice is being investigated by the parliamentary standards watchdog. The MP for Boston and Skegness is accused of failing to reveal an interest in Israel while speaking at a debate in Westminster Hall. A Reform source said it was “baffling”, adding: “He was fighting antisemitism in Westminster Hall, and it ends up in an investigation.” The probe, which opened on July 28, was confirmed yesterday by the parliamentary commissioner for standards. It last week declined to investigate a complaint made against Mr Tice on an undeclared loan of nearly £80,000 from George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster. The Reform deputy said: “I have a number of corporate loans in my companies. None of them are declarable, They are to do with my property business activities.“ He added that his shareholdings and directorships were declared.

RAPISTS, ‘serious’ child sex offenders and grooming gang members will be excluded from Labour’s early release scheme. Prime Minister Andy Burnham insisted he wanted to “go even further” and keep more criminals locked up longer. And the first tranche of releases is being delayed by a month – to October – amid fears probation teams will not be ready for dangerous criminals to be freed. Mr Burnham said: “I fully understand the anger, anxiety and distress that’s been caused. That’s why we’re making significant changes – offenders who have been sentenced for rape, serious child sex offences and other grooming offences will be excluded from the changes.”

ANDY Burnham has been accused of “running away from the country” on a summer holiday just two weeks after he became Prime Minister. The Prime Minister has been in the job for just two weeks. The former Greater Manchester mayor will take a break from the day-to-day duties while away for a week with his family. It is understood he will continue to work, holding meetings and remaining in direct contact with officials, and is prepared to return early if needed.
Reform UK chairman Lee Anderson said yesterday: “Two weeks into the job and Andy Burnham has already had enough. After dropping a number of unfunded commitments and overseeing over 2,000 illegal migrants breaking into our country he’s bunked off for a jolly abroad. This isn’t a Prime Minister that’s serious about leading.”
Mr Burnham will leave tinderbox Britain as several regions are plunged into drought, small-boat migrants continue to arrive in droves and the cost-of-living crisis bites. The trip comes amid growing concern among Westminster mandarins about how little time Mr Burnham has spent in Downing Street since becoming PM.
It is also 12 weeks until new Chancellor John Healey gives his first Budget – which is expected to include tax rises.

KEIR Starmer quickly earned himself the nickname “Never Here Keir” and “Out of Office” – Andy Burnham risks following in his footsteps as he heads abroad for a summer break. In that time, he has made a string of unfunded announcements, opened No10 North and held talks with Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky. But Westminster critics say that the “King of the North” has barely settled into the job before taking a break from the day-to-day business of running the country.
Burnham has spent little time in Downing Street since becoming PM. His tendency to be out and about even prompted First Secretary of State Louise Haigh to joke at a Cabinet Office all-staff meeting last week that No10 was “extremely distressed” by how often he was away. She stressed that the Prime Minister was simply “so dedicated and committed” to getting out into the country.
Mr Burnham’s much-flaunted commitment to getting out of Westminster and into the country will be temporarily interrupted when he jets abroad for a holiday from today. He will continue to take meetings and stay in contact with officials while spending time with his family, it is understood. But while Mr Burnham is away, the business of government continues. Small-boat migrants are arriving in droves, tinderbox Britain is scorched by drought, and there is still a cost-of-living crisis which shows no signs of easing.
John O’Connell, the chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance think-tank, said yesterday: “Not content with running away from Westminster to open No10 North, Andy Burnham is now running away from the country. Brits struggling with the tax burden deserve 100% commitment from No10, not a Prime Minister governing on roaming charges.”
Mr Burnham won the Makerfield by-election on July 4 before arriving at No10. His predecessor Sir Keir Starmer was forced to rip up his first holiday as PM when the country was gripped by far-right riots in August 2024. The unrest came in the wake of the knife murders of three girls at a dance class in Southport. In August 2021 the-then PM Boris Johnson cut short a break in Somerset as Taliban insurgents advanced on the Afghan capital Kabul.

CAMPAIGNERS demanding a fair deal for women affected by the state pension age increase have written to Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey calling for urgent talks. Angela Madden, chair of the Women Against State Pension Inequality campaign, is urging Mr Burnham to ensure 1950s-born women receive fair redress. Andy Burnham became the PM on July 20. He promised to meet campaigners in the run-up to June’s Makerfield by-election.
Ms Madden said: “While recognising the new Prime Minister has a long list of things to fix, we are now asking him, alongside the Chancellor, to sit down with Waspi to determine what redress for 1950s-born women looks like. For far too long, Waspi women have been let down by governments of all colours and are understandably desperate to see this long-running injustice put right.”
The campaign wants compensation for the 3.5 million women affected by failures to properly communicate state pension age increases. Campaigners say this lack of adequate notice left many without sufficient time to make alternative arrangements for their retirement. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman in 2024 recommended that the government paid compensation for 1950s-born women who have suffered injustice. Sir Keir Starmer’s government rejected the proposal, saying such compensation was not fair, feasible or good value to taxpayers.

A SON who kept his mum’s body in a freezer in his dining room for nearly three years while claiming her pension and benefits has been jailed. Christopher Phillips, 60, was arrested in February after his mum Sylvia’s GP practice asked police to carry out a welfare check. She died, aged 89, on March 8, 2023, Merthyr Tydfil crown court was told. Two days later her son bought a chest freezer from AO.com and moved downstairs to sleep next to it. He sometimes held her hand and talked to her about Coronation Street, horse racing and other subjects, he said. Phillips told police: “I basically didn’t want to let her go.” He sobbed in the dock as his lawyer Ruth Smith said he was “extremely close to his mother”, who adopted him when he was two. A psychiatrist diagnosed prolonged grief disorder. Phillips also pocketed £78,190.92 in state pension, pensions credit, attendance allowance, winter fuel payments, cost-of-living payments and housing benefit payments, which should have stopped. When Sylvia’s GP practice tried to contact her, he denied access, claiming she had moved to London. She was found in a leopard-print silk blanket with flowers and a birthday card from her son and their dog. Phillips admitted failing to lawfully and decently bury his mother and two counts of fraud and was jailed for two years and four months. Confiscation proceedings to recover the money will follow.

TONY Livesey will not return to his Radio 5 Live show after stepping away in June, following a BBC investigation into former West Ham chairman David Sullivan. In a letter sent to staff yesterday, the BBC said presenter Livesey would be leaving after a 16-year stint at the radio station. It comes nearly two months after a Panorama programme looked into Sullivan’s behaviour when he owned the Daily and Sunday Sport newspapers. Entitled Predator: The Billionaire Football Boss, it spoke to seven women who claimed Sullivan was sexually exploitative towards them, which he “categorically denies”. He then announced that he was quitting as West Ham director to fight what he said were false allegations about him. Livesey was editor-in-chief of the papers – working alongside Sullivan – before joining the BBC, landing his 5 Live show in 2010. Heidi Dawson, controller of BBC Radio 5 Live, wrote: “I wanted to let you know that Tony Livesey has decided to leave his presenting role on 5 Live.” Praising him for building a “loyal late night audience” she added: “Tony has asked me to pass on his heartfelt thanks to the brilliant colleagues at 5 Live who he has had the pleasure of working with.” On June 9, the BBC said Livesey had “asked to step back from presenting his radio show for a short period” while bosses considered the claims. Livesey, 62, has not presented his late-night 5 Live show since June 8. He told the programme he had “great sympathy for a woman who may have become a victim”, but rejected any suggestion that he had played “any role whatsoever in that scenario” and said he found the allegation “abhorrent”. The ex-Daily Sport editor featured in Panorama probe as ‘Florence’ said Livesey introduced her to Sullivan, who then arranged for her to visit his home. Livesey said he did not recall putting a woman on the phone to talk to Sullivan as Florence said and insisted it was not part of his role to introduce anyone to him. Panorama pointed to a passage in Livesey’s 1998 book saying that he and Sullivan had devised the idea for a “countdown to 16” feature, with countdowns to models’ 16th birthdays, when they could be pictured topless legally for the first time. Livesey later said the feature was not his idea. Sullivan, 77, has said he “categorically denies” the claims in the joint investigation with Panorama and The Times. The allegations span the period when he made a fortune from pornography, newspapers and football. Former model Sacha Wall – the only alleged victim named in the investigation – said she was 24 when Sullivan asked her to perform a sex act. Sullivan worked with Livesey at Sport newspapers.

Tate throw boy back home after 7 years

The French youngster was six when he suffered life-changing injuries in the attack in London seven years ago today. His parents, who call their 13-year-old “notre petit chevalier” – our little knight – revealed the news online. They said: “We wanted to let you know that our little knight has finally left the hospital! “His hospital stay was kept as short as possible because our son was becoming deeply disheartened and kept asking when he could go back to class and see his friends. It was a great joy for him to return to school shortly before the summer holidays.”
The boy’s injuries included a bleed on the brain and multiple broken bones. His intensive rehabilitation is continuing, including physio, speech therapy and neuropsychology. To celebrate the end of his hospital stay, his parents are treating him to a tandem paragliding flight and a seaside getaway with friends. They said: “We are going to try to fully recharge his batteries (and our own) and to get back to a family routine as normal as possible.”
The family are being helped with medical costs by a GoFundMe account, set up by Surrey nurse Vicky Diplacto, which has raised more than £500,000. Attacker Jonty Bravery, then 17, was locked up for at least 15 years after admitting attempted murder.

ARIANA Grande has pulled out of her West End debut, citing “endless public scrutiny”. She was due to star in the upcoming London revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical Sunday in the Park With George, opposite her Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey. Instead, the 33-year-old is taking a break from the public eye after finishing her Eternal Sunshine tour in September. A spokesman said: “Ariana will be taking a step back from visibility. She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny.”

The announcement comes after critics raised concerns over Ariana’s appearance in the video for Petal, the title track off her new album. In it, Ariana plays a performer who is told at auditions she “should get some work done”, then that she has “too much work done.” TV star Jameela Jamil is among those to have expressed concern, comparing her to singer Karen Carpenter, who died in 1983 after a battle with anorexia. Jameela, 40, who has previously lived with an eating disorder, said: “The shrinking pop star situation is something of a trolley problem. “If we comment on her body, we could harm her mental health. If we don’t comment on her body, we run the risk of normalising that image to hundreds of millions of teenage girls, kids and even impressionable adults.”
Ariana has previously urged fans to stop commenting on her body. In 2024, Ariana said she has felt like a “specimen in a petri dish” since she was a teenager. She added: “I have heard it all. I have heard every form of what is wrong with me. And then you fix it and then it is wrong for different reasons.” The American star first found fame as a child star playing Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon television shows Victorious and Sam & Cat. She has won three Grammy Awards and was nominated for an Oscar for her role as Glinda in Wicked. ONE in eight mums in England are being diagnosed with diabetes while pregnant, according to analysis. It also revealed a sharp rise among some ethnic minority groups and the poor. University researchers found a 60% surge in gestational diabetes diagnosis in five years and warned it is a “vulnerability in the healthcare system” which affects mothers and their babies. The condition can increase a woman’s risk of cardiovascular disease and puts them at a higher risk of pre-eclampsia which can cause organ damage. Diabetes can lead to premature births, emergency C-sections and babies born larger or smaller than expected. Gestational diabetes happens when women cannot produce enough insulin – a hormone that helps control blood sugar levels. The research by the University of Edinburgh, published in the journal BMJ Medicine, found the increase in cases was highest among women of colour – 23% – Asian women and those living in deprivation (14%).

THE autism spectrum may have become “too broad” and risks misunderstanding the needs of patients, according to an expert. University College London Professor Dame Uta Frith, whose research in the 1960s and 70s laid the foundations for how autism is understood, said the definition has “widened” to include people with milder traits. Autism is a type of neurodivergence which impacts the way people communicate and experience the world. Dame Uta, writing in the journal Psychological Medicine, said: “When it was first identified in the 1940s, it referred to a small group of children with severe difficulties in social interaction, communication and behaviour. Today, anyone of any age or intelligence level can be diagnosed with autism if they meet certain criteria. The time has come to examine whether the autism spectrum has become too broad. Without greater precision, we risk misunderstanding people’s needs and misdirecting care.”

BABY Theo has become the first child from the UK to have his intestines nudged back into his abdomen while still in his mum’s womb. He was suffering from gastroschisis, where the belly button does not develop properly leading to the food tube growing outside the body. Mother Maisie Savage, 29, was 24 weeks pregnant when she and Theo’s dad Josh French, 36, were given the option of the pioneering operation at Texas Children’s Hospital. Medics at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London said she would have to fly to the US immediately and stay until the birth. First she had to travel to Leuven Hospital in Belgium – the third partner in a clinical trial of the procedure – for a Botox jab. It was given through her womb into Theo’s abdomen, relaxing the wall to simplify repairs. In Texas, surgeon Dr Michael Belfort exposed Maisie’s womb and drained the amniotic fluid, then inflated her with CO2 for more space. Using keyhole surgery, Theo’s intestines were tucked inside him and he was stitched up. Maisie, who gave birth in February, three months later, said: “He’s a little miracle, isn’t he? Everything they did just completely reversed what could have been a really horrible start to his life and he’s just the best. He’s a completely normal baby, essentially.” The family are now recovering at home in London and told their story to raise awareness.
